Tides & Time: Ladner's Fishing History

Strolling along Delta's Millennium Trail past the Marina and bobbing fishing boats, or leaning on the weathered railings of Ladner's wooden wharf, one can't help but ponder about our fishing history and connection to waterways. With BC's Heritage Week happening February 17th - 23rd, there's no better time to dive into Ladner's deep-rooted fishing history. So, let's journey back to the start.

Picture this: It's the 1870s, and two adventurous brothers, Thomas and William Ladner, come across the riverbanks of the Fraser River. These pioneering siblings saw more than flatlands and muddy water - they saw a strategic location filled with potential - and they would be (prawn) spot on! While Thomas Ladner established himself in the fishing industry and founded the Delta Cannery, his brother William turned his attention to the soil, helping establish two cornerstones of our community's heritage - maritime commerce and agriculture.

Cannery Culture

The late 1800s ushered in what locals fondly call Ladner's 'salmon boom.' The Fraser River was practically jumping with salmon, and canneries were springing up faster than fish stories. Delta Cannery was one of them, established in 1878 near what we now call Port Guichon.

The cannery landscape along the Fraser River grew rapidly. By the 1890s, Ladner boasted several major canneries including the Wellington Cannery (1893) and the Brunswick Cannery (1896). In fact, by the time 1890 rang in, there were 16 canneries on this side of the Fraser alone. Each operation employed hundreds during the peak season, creating a diverse workforce that helped shape Ladner's cultural identity.

The industry flourished through the early 1900s, but gradually faced challenges. The Hell's Gate slide of 1913 severely impacted salmon runs. Later, as the 70s and 80s approached, changes in fishing regulations, environmental topics, shifts in the global market, and concerns about fish stocks led to industry consolidation. Many of the original canneries merged or closed operations by the mid-20th century, marking the end of Ladner's cannery era - though not its fishing heritage.

But all is not lost! While many historic canneries have since closed, St. Jean's Cannery is alive and well - and local! Founded on Vancouver Island in the '60s, St. Jean’s is one of the last major seafood canneries still in operation in BC - with six locations - one of them in our very own Tilbury (#106-7950 Huston Rd). Known for its high-quality, locally sourced seafood - including wild salmon, tuna, and smoked oysters - the company continues to support local fishers and uphold the rich traditions of seafood processing, as well as offers a tasty gift shop online and in Delta, BC for tourists and local seafood lovers to stock up. With a commitment to sustainability and small-batch craftsmanship, St. Jean’s continues to thrive.

Local Catches

Want a taste of our maritime bounty? Here are a few local spots to satisfy your seafood cravings:

Superior Fish Market & Specialty Foods in Ladner's Trenant Park is your spot to create culinary magic with fresh fish caught off family boats. Family-operated since 1981, this local gem offers everything from wild salmon and halibut to spot prawns (when in season). Whether you're planning a special dinner or just craving the catch of the day, their knowledgeable staff can help with ideas and cooking tips.

For a cozy break where your fresh catch is served, try Sharkey's Seafood Bar & Grille for Ladner's favourite fish & chips. During chillier months, their maritime-themed decor and friendly atmosphere make it the perfect spot to experience Ladner's connection to the sea, while spring may see you sitting on their award-winning patio perched on the banks of the Fraser River taking in a signature sunset.

Or, mosey up to Delta Street for an Italian spin on local ingredients at Il Posto Restaurant. This charming locally-owned restaurant combines Italian traditions with fresh seafood and Delta-grown produce. From their seafood linguine featuring locally caught prawns to seasonal specials that showcase our region's bounty, Il Posto offers a delicious blend of Mediterranean flair and West Coast flavours in the heart of Ladner Village.
